Post-doc in malaria glycobiology

The Inflammation laboratory (LINK) led by Miguel P. Soares (LINK) at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Oeiras/Lisbon (LINK) Portugal, is seeking a highly motivated scientist, at a post-doctoral level, to develop a research project in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (LINK). The position is open immediately for an estimated period of two years. The research project will assess α-gal glycans as potential antigenic targets to be included in a malaria vaccine to be developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (LINK). The focus is on expanding the pre-clinical data on the effects of α-gal-specific antibodies (LINK1 & LINK2) in preventing Plasmodium infection and/or malaria transmission, using Bill & Melinda Gates foundation platform assays. The research project should guide the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation decision on future investment on α-gal glycans as a new transmission-blocking vaccine candidate. The project is to be carried through an ongoing collaboration with Prof. Henrique Silveira at the “Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical” in Lisbon (LINK). Other critical relationships include the Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI). The selected candidate will have a strong and traceable track record in cellular immunology and/or glycobiology with previous experience in rodent models of Plasmodium infection and ideally including mosquito-based Plasmodium transmission.
